Full Description
Swallowcroft, Barnton. The site of a manor house occupied in the 14th century when the Starkies obtained the manor from the Dutton. It is shown as ruins on the 1845 Tithe map. 1969 - Excavations revealed a 14th century hall probably of cruck construction, with a hall with an inglenook fireplace & a pantry/buttery possibly with a sleeping loft above. Also a separate kitchen & 2 15th C cess pits. In Tudor period, hall was modified with the addition of a cross hall. A brick-lined cellar was dug through the floor of the earlier kitchen & had a drain to a circular stone-lined latrine pit in late 17th/early 18th C. This had been filled with wattle & daub, timber, leather scraps & pottery. Complete destruction took place in the early 19th C (1). Plan & suggested restoration (2)
