Summary

Stone base for a medieval preaching cross in the centre of the original village of Gawsworth. The cross consists of plinth of dressed gritstone blocks rising to two steps surmounted by a gritstone block cut into 2 steps with a fragment of shaft pinned and cemented to the top. It stands in its original position beside the road junction on what is now a fenced triangular lawn known locally as the Pleasance. It is a Scheduled Monument . Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Medieval preaching cross at the Warren (1). A cross comprised of two steps, a 'stepped' socket stone and fragment of shaft (2). Cross base for a medieval preaching cross at the junction of Church Lane & Woodhouse Lane, 600 NNW of New Hall Farm, in the centre of the original village of Gawsworth. Cross consists of plinth of dressed gritstone blocks rising to two steps surmounted by a gritstone block cut into 2 steps with a fragment of shaft pinned & cemented to top. Steps are square & are 2m wide x 0.17m high. 2nd step is 1.4m wide x 0.2m high. Base block is also square & is 0.9m wide x 0. 3m high rising to a step 0.64m wide x 0.24m high. Shaft fragment is squared in section & is 0.83m high. Stands in its original position beside the road junction on what is now a fenced triangular lawn known locally as the Pleasance. Set back 1.4m from the road edge, & is 0.5m above the present ground level (3).
