Summary

This site of a medieval dam and millpond is a Scheduled Monument though the associated watermill cannot be traced. Pollen analysis suggests a date of mid 15th century for construction. It was abandoned around 1750 and was dry until reinstated in 1977. A dry leat (water channel) runs from the pond towards Cheersgreen Farm.

Poss fishpond at Holly Tree Cottage. Prob medieval but could be 17th C

Mrs J Burton reports an earth dam with pond at SJ 713736, 60 yds long, 12-14 ft high, with a mature trees. Breach repaired c.1976. Small leats run to SW. Pollen analysis by student of J Tallis, Manchester Univ, implies mid C15 date of construction

Dam & millpond in garden of Holly Tree Cottage. Dry leat, leads from SW end of dam & runs towards Cheersgreen Farm. Mill cannot now be traced. Dam is an earthwork bank, 52m long x 5m wide & an av 3m high. Middle of dam breached & modern sluice inserted. Dam has formed a pond 30-50m wide x 80m long. Black soil 0.5m deep beside pool represents bed of millpool. Leat is a ditch, c.5m wide, leading from SW end of dam & running 50m SW, then 100m W, then 55m down slope into a brook. This is the tailrace for the mill. 1977 organic deposits analysed & a date c.1430 proposed for dam & pool. Pool abandoned c.1750, dry until reinstated 1977
