The Old Hall was destroyed by fire and was replaced by Birtles Hall (c.1km to the north), which was built by the Hibbert family c.1780.
<3> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol.III p.709-11 (Book). SCH1389.
Ormerod notes that the Swettenhams of Swettenham made the hall their residence and then sold it to the Hibbert family, who removed to a 'spacious mansion' known as Birtles Hall. He describes an estate called Birtles of the Pale which was sold to the Hibbert family and where there is 'a very old and good specimen of the black and white houses'.
