Summary

Medieval Church Cross at St Mary's Church, Nether Alderley. It is grade II listed and a Scheduled Monument . The base of the cross is square below and then shaped to octagonal above. There is a rectangular shaft set into it which has been cut off and shows the setting for a sundial (now missing). The east face has the letter B carved on it. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Churchyard Cross, Church Drive. Medieval. Ashlar buff sandstone. Base is a square below and shaped to octagonal above. This has a chamfered rectangular shaft set into it which has been cut off and shows the setting for a sundial (now missing). East face has the letter B carved on it (1). In 1940 an inscription with the date 1700 was recorded (2). Base & part of shaft of a cross, 7m from S porch of Church of St Mary. Cross base is a single block of sandstone set on a step built of dressed stone. Step is 1.5m sq & 0.3m high. Block base is 1.1m sq at bottom, shaped to an octagonal top with simple shoulder pads at each corner. Shaft is octagonal set in a square socle. Cross is 1.3m high. Letter 'B' is cut on east face. Top of shaft has fitting for sundial which is missing (3).
