Summary

Grade II listed and a Scheduled Monument. A part of the octagonal shaft of the original cross of 15th century date is placed above two square 19th century steps and used as a sundial. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Sundial in churchyard of Church of St Lawrence, Peover Hall Park. 19th century adaptation, using part of the octagonal shaft of the original cross of 15th century date placed above two sqaure l9th century steps. Dial plate and gnomon now missing. Shaft is inscribed 1651 (1). Portion of original octagonal cross shaft, erected 10m to west of cross (RN: 1213/3/2) & re-used as a sundial. Shaft is 0.95m high (2).
