Summary

Scheduled Monument and Grade II listed Cross Base and Cross in the Churchyard of St Lawrence at Peover Hall Park. The cross base is 15th century and the shaft dates to 1907. It is a standing cross on a base with three steps. The shaft is a memorial to Philip Tatton Mainwaring from 1907. A portion of the original shaft survives as a sundial elsewhere in the churchyard. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Cross Base and Cross in Churchyard of St Lawrence, Peover Hall Park. Cross Base 15th century and cross of 1907. Ashlar, square. Three steps to square plinth with an octagonal shaft base. Memorial to Philip Tatton Mainwaring 1907. A portion of the original shaft to the cross survives as the support to a sundial in the churchyard (RN: 1213/3/3) (1). Standing cross on 3 steps, together with a portion of the shaft which has been erected 10m to W of cross & is re-used as sundial, Cross steps of sandstone ashlar construction. 1st step 2.7m sq & is 0.15m high. 2nd step is 2.1m sq & 0.2m high. 3rd step is 1.45m sq & 0.2m high. Base block is square at the bottom & rises to octagonal with plain padded shoulders. Steps are listed Grade II. Cross base is 15th C with cross shaft & head dated 1907 set into it.
