Monument record 2209/2 - Possible Site of Watermill in Macclesfield

Please read our .

Summary

A roughly rectangular raised area on a flat narrow terrace next to a stream was identified during a field visit. A short section of hollow way (cutting for a path or road), approximately 17m long and 2m wide marks it's southern edge. The adjacent field to south is listed as Lower Mill field in 1849 tithe apportionment. A 13th century document refers to a mill on Titherington family lands so it is possiblle this is the site of a mill. Tithe Maps were produced between 1838 and 1854 and they record the names of owners, tenants, and values of property in each parish. They were created to establish taxation rates.
