Summary

Grade II listed non-conformist chapel and cottage, now single dwelling. It was built in 1759 with 19th and 20th century additions. It is red brick with a welsh slate roof.It was built by followers of John Johnson (Baptist Minster, Liverpool, 1741-7). In the late 19th century it became a preaching station of Higher Lane Chapel, Lymm. From 1924 it has been a house and workshop. It is listed for its historical importance.

Full Description

Chapel House, Reddy Lane (West side ), Arthill. Non-conformist chapel & cottage, now single dwelling. 1759, early C19th adds, C20th alterations. Red brick. Welsh slate roof. Former chapel on left has 6-panel door beneath segmental brick arch with keystone; small casement window over. To left of door 2 large, round-headed windows with projecting stone sills, C20th casements and brick arches with keystones. To right of door is a casement under segmental arch with keystone and a blocked doorway (now window ) with similar head; C20th 3-light casement window over. Rear: much altered; remains of 2 segmental arches in rear wall of chapel. Interior: altered; floor inserted in chapel, 2 original King-post trusses, one with tie beam cut through. Built by followers of John Johnson (Baptist Minster, Liverpool, 1741-7); Late C19th became a preaching station of Higher Lane Chapel, Lymm. From 1924 a house and workshop. A congregation of Johnsonian Baptist formed in the mid 18th century aquired the present site 'part of a meadow............containing 8 roods 29 yards of Cheshire measure' in 1759. The meeting house registered in October 1759, eventually became a preaching-station for Higher Lane Chapel, Lymm but closed c1924. It was subsequently used as a workshop. In 1987 the whole property was under conversion into a private house (5).
