The field name Middle Black Earth, recorded on the tithe award (see 2), may represent the remnants of a former settlement which is recognised as dark earth in a field. However, it may also refer to a dump of post medieval manuring debris or a small patch of peaty soil.

Field name 'Black Earth' is recorded on Bollington in Bowden tithe award of 1839.
