Summary

A Romano-British coin hoard in a pot was found by cavers from the Derbyshire Caving Club. 418 coins were excavated from the ceramic pot, most of which were bronze with a silver wash consistent in date to the first half of the fourth century AD, during the time of the emperors from the House of Constantine. Pollen analysis of the fill of the pot was also carried out. The results concluded that ground cover on Alderley Edge was mostly heather with grasses, sedges and herbs also being prominent. Tree cover included alder and Willow. The hoard had been buried at the top of a disused mine shaft in the Engine Vein area of the Edge. This confirms that the deep mine workings are at least Roman in date, and possibly earlier

A Romano-British coin hoard was found within a ceramic pot by cavers from the Derbyshire Caving Club. 553 coins were found within this hoard. 418 coins were excavated from the ceramic pot, most of which were bronze with a silver wash consistent in date to the first half of the fourth century AD. The coins were that of the Constantine House including GLORIA EXERCITVS, wreath within both, VOT XX and VOT XXX inside and the PROVIDENTIAE CAESS and VERTVS AVGG respectively. The upper parts of the pot including the rim were absent so identification of the pot has not been made. The pot was dark brown, hard and well fired material with upto 25% quartz inclusions. Pollen analysis of the fill of the pot was also under taken with the recovery of a macro-fossil of a beetle. The results concluded that ground cover on the Edge was mostly that of Heather with grasses, sedges and herbs also being prominent. Tree cover included alder and Willow.

Report on the 'excavation' of the coins from the pot in the laboratory. Full report on coins themselves is still awaited from Keith Sugden, but preliminary analysis suggests a deposition date in the second quarter of 4th century AD. Hoard had been buried at the top of a disused mine shaft in the Engine Vein area of the Edge. This confirms that the deep mine workings are at least Roman in date, and possibly earlier.
