Full Description

The entrance to the Endon Quarries (SJ 9375 7658) was connected to a wharf on the Macclesfield Canal (SJ 9307 7676) by the Kerridge Tramway. This was built in 1829 by William Clayton. The tramway required substantial embankments on the lower stretch, and a new road bridge. Horses hauled wagons between the wharf and the incline. The incline probably included a steam winding engine, near Endon Cottage (SJ 9375 7658), where a chimney stands, which Longden calls the "Victoria Engine Chimney", citing the OS 1st edition as his source (1). Checking of the OS 1st and 2nd editions failed to reveal this name(2,3 & 4). The tramway was 3' guage, and half a mile of stone sleepers indicate that it was a double track (5).
