Summary

The name Kerridge means "Boulder Ridge" . These quarries were in existence in 1515, when they were held by Macclesfield Corporation, on lease from the Crown. They were assigned to local landowners in 1625. Throughout the Industrial Revolution they were worked by the Green, Bann, Henshall and Gatley families. Between 1877 and 1905, Joseph Wetton acquired 10-12 large quarries, from Teg's Nose in the south, to Billinge in the north. His stoneworks were opposite Adelphi Mill. William Clayton owned the Endon Quarries in 1829, as well as the tramway to the canal. His office and weighing machine were at Oak Fold Farm. When his estate was sold, in 1910, it consisted of Endon Quarries, Endon Hall, Field Cottage, workmen's cottages, the farm and the canal wharf.

The tumulus under White Nancy (SJ 9394 7712) is a dump of quarry waste (5).
