Summary

The site of a watermill which is believed to date from the medieval period. Historic maps depict the mill house and mill adjacent to the Long Water, the mill pond remodelled in the mid-eighteenth century as part of Adlington Hall’s formal gardens. None of the buildings survive, but two of the millstones are displayed in the Hall quadrangle.

Full Description

<1> Norris J.H., 1968, The Water-Powered Corn Mills of Cheshire, p.61 (Article in Journal). SCH6001.

‘…A site with few identifiable remains as the building has completely collapsed and was last used about 1896. The mill was built against the dam and there is some evidence of the old pentrough (see 2), but the pool is now silted up. Two of the millstones are in the Hall quadrangle…’

A trough or channel typically made of wooden boards, which conveyed water from the mill pond to the top of the waterwheel.

This map depicts the mill house and the mill building. The mill house is parallel and adjacent to Mill Lane with a yard behind. The mill building is located on the north-eastern side of the yard next to the mill pond.
