Summary

Grade II listed former workhouse, now part of the hospital. It was built between 1843-5 and has 20th century alterations. The building is symmetrically planned with long range running north-south and projecting wings. It is 3 storeys high. The central double gabled entrance originally divided the female and male areas of the building.

Full Description

Former workhouse, now part of the hospital. Built 1843-5, with 20th century alterations. Coursed and squared rubble with scallop tiled roof. Symmetrically planned with long range running north-south, with projecting wings. 3 storeys. Central double gabled entrance and office block, originally dividing the female and male areas of the building. Lantern carrying clock over centre, with leaded base and weather vane. Long ranges either side. Axial stacks with single attic dormer between them. Formerly male day rooms to south, female to north. Projecting cross wings are 2 1/2 storeyed, with coped gable in each face to front. Projecting gables over secondary doors on north and south elevations. In 1874, the front wings housed infirm male and female day rooms and bedrooms to north and south, the rear wings a nursery to the north, a tailor shop to the south. Central rear wing housed kitchen in semi basement, with dining hall and chapel above (1).
