Summary

Grade II listed corn mill. Builtin the 1850's. It is red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. To the left is a square drying kin with a pyrimidal roof. The Davenport crest is carved in stone over the principal entrance. The head pool is up the lane, with water flowing along a leat, under the road to a regulating pond with a sluice control, through a culvert to the wheel. The wheel was replaced with a turbine after the First World War, which was later replaced with a Diesel engine. There is an extension shaft carried outside the mill which was driven by a belt from a tractor, to start the engine. The wheel was overshot and the frame is iron, as are the gears that originally drove 4 pairs of stones, now 1 pair. On the stone floor there is a disintegrator, a Bamford oil-cake breaker, a chemical dresser and a vertical cylinder mixer. There is also a friction plate sack hoist.

Full Description

Corn mill c. 1850s. Red English garden wall bond with stone dressings and slate roof. 3 storeys, 4 bays. To the left is a square drying kin with a pyrimidal roof (1). The Davenport crest is carved in stone over the principal entrance. The head pool is up the lane, with water flowing along a leat, under the road to a regulating pond with a sluice control, through a culvert to the wheel. The wheel was replaced with a turbine after the First World War, which was later replaced with a 30-40 h.p. Crossley Diesel. There is an extension shaft carried outside the mill which was driven by a belt from a tractor, to start the engine. The wheel was overshot, 14' x 5'. The frame is iron, as are the gears that originally drove 4 pairs of stones, now 1 pair. On the stone floor there is a disintegrator, a Bamford oil-cake breaker, a chemical dresser and a vertical cylinder mixer. Friction plate sack hoist (2).
