Summary

A narrow guage plateway (early colliery railway) running the length of Towers Road from North Lodge to Lord and Lady Pits. A branch came off towards Lower Vernon Pits, but was later replaced by Colliery Railway. It was built by 1840 and closed by 1866, with only the sections inside pits surviving as narrow guage railways (not to be confused with the underground railways) Poynton was once a coal mining community with the colliery operating from the 17th century until its closure in 1935. A network of railway branch lines linked the different pits and allowed the coal to be transported to Manchester, Winsford and Crewe. A number of terraced cottages built for the miners can be found in Poynton.
