Full Description
Also known as West Yard and East Yard, because the yard was split by the turnpike road. The yard was the area where coal from the pits was gathered, at the bottom of the Prince's and Lady's Inclines, and transferred to the Colliery branch of the LNWR. Wagons had to be taken across the level crossing (whose gates opened into the yards ) by horse, and were then taken to the main line by LNWR locomotives. The yard was replaced by Tower Yard, although the LNWR continued to run its locomotives as far as West Yard (1).
