Summary

Late Bronze Age (1000 - 700BC) socketed axe. It has a square socket, and 3 parallel ribs running down both faces. It was found in two parts in a ploughed field at Withington Green. The 2 halves were located 1.5 metres apart. The fracture is not recent, but could have resulted from plough impact. Socketed axes were cast around a clay core to give a hollow centre. They often have loops so they could be tied to the handle.

Full Description

Late Bronze Age socketed axe. Length 10.7cm, max width of cutting edge 5.2cms, max eternal diameter of socket moulding 4cms. the axe has a square socket, and 3 parallel ribs running down both faces (i.e. extruding between the base of the moulding and the cutting face). Conforms to a style current in the Late Bronze Age Ewart Park Phase. Found in two parts at approx. 25cms depth, in a ploughed field at Withington Green. The 2 halves were located 1.5m apart. The fracture is not recent, but could have resulted from plough impact. Reported 9/95. With finder (1). Photos in file.
