Summary

The Poynton Branch of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company was constructed between 1844 and 1845. This was the second railway station constructed for Poynton and replaced the earlier station at Midway. It was proposed in 1884 and built between 1886 and 1887, and opened on the first of August 1887. Historic maps depict platforms with canopies on both the up and down lines. The main station building is on the up line (eastern side) and a further station building is located on the platform on the down line (western side). A footbridge connects both platforms. A single siding is located on the western side and is associated with a crane and a coal wharf.

Poynton Railway Station is a Victorian red brick building comprising stone pilasters with detailing, timber windows, and a slate roof. Locally Listed.

The Poynton Branch of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company was constructed between 1844 and 1845. A station on a more favourable level site and closer to the village was proposed in 1884 and built between 1886 and 1887 replacing the earlier station at Midway (see CHER 2529/1/15). The bricks used in it's construction came from the adjacent Poynton brickworks. It was opened on the first of August 1887.

This map depicts platforms on both the up and down lines. The station house is on the up line (eastern side) and appears to have a canopy over part of the platform. A further station canopied building is located on the platform on the down line (western side). A footbridge connects both platforms. A single siding is located on the western side and is associated with a crane and what is labelled as a wharf.
