Summary

Scheduled Monument and Grade II listed socket stone for two crosses. It was found in 1958 during the digging of a drain behind Disley Church. A piece of lead is set into one of the two socket holes. The stone base is thought to be the setting for two Saxon crosses which are now lost. Two other crosses were found here in 1848 but were removed to Lymm Hall. An early font bowl was also discovered during the 1958 diggings and now rests close to the porch of the church.

Full Description

Socket stone for 2 crosses. Found in 1958 during the digging of a drain behind Disley Church (1), at SJ 97448449 (2). Base now set against the low boundary wall between the old & new churchyard SSW of the church tower. It is 1.85m long, 0.87m wide. The circular sockets measure 0.51m diam (Eastern socket), 0.62m diam (Western socket) are set in the stone 0.22m from the edge of the stone & are 0.21m apart. The sockets are bevelled inwards & have shallow grooves running between them & in front of the right- hand hole (3). A piece of lead is set into one of the holes. Thought to be setting for 2 Saxon crosses now lost (4). Two other crosses were found here in 1848 but removed to Lymm Hall and an early font bowl was also discovered during the 1958 diggings and now rests close to the porch of the church (5).
