Full Description

Observations made during an extension to the medieval crypt under No 11 Watergate Street in 1894 (then owned by the vintners Quellyn Roberts) indicated medieval pitting activity in the area of the new cellar.

One medieval rubbish pit was recorded in the north east angle of the site, of apparent 15th century date it contained horn cores, animal bone, pottery etc. It may have been stone-lined, butting onto the external south wall of the undercroft, possibly originally beneath a garderobe at first floor level. Finds from the site generally were saved by the owners although no record of their associated feature was made. The catalogue of finds from the site consisted of a number of floor tiles of medieval date and small quantity of medieval pottery including locally produced 13th to 14th century ware, 14th to 15th century Saintonge ware, and fragments of 14th to 15th century Ewloe type ware.
