Stone chimney which ventilated the Danebower coal mine (2).
The chimney was for a furnace which provided ventilation for one of the shafts at Danebower Colliery. The colliery was last worked in 1925. The furnace and tower were built in the 19th centuiry but only the chimney survives. It is 8 metres tall and 1.3 metres wide at the base. It is one of only nine surviving ventilation chimneys in England (4).
The coal fields in Cheshire and Lancashire are severely folded and faulted, producing difficult working conditions. The seams are generally thin, producing coking, steam and household coals; cannel coals were more common to the southwest (5).
The chimney was for a furnace which provided ventilation for one of the shafts at Danebower Colliery. The colliery was last worked in 1925. The furnace and tower were built in the 19th centuiry but only the square chimney survives. It is 8 metres tall and 1.3 metres wide at the base. Currently standing in an area of rough grazing to the west of a disused quarry. Repointing is needed if the monument is to survive (6).
