Full Description
Folly Mill, Paper Mill. Built by 'Mr Abraham Day ..... possibly about 1780 or 1790. It was used to manufacture coarse paper (brown or blue) such as is used by grocers or ironmongers.' Built in inaccessible spot and given name 'Abraham Day's Folly', another tradition holds that Day's folly was to twice rebuild the mill after floods had washed it away. By 1825 the mill passed into hands of Thomas Hope who also ran the paper mill at Whitelee. In 1825 the Mill was advertised as 'Folly Grove Mill' (1). Ruined (2).
