Cleulow Cross. A stone pillar 9ft 3ins high & 6ft 8ins to the first moulding. It stands on a raised mound, which is probably artificial. The socket stone in which it is fixed is nearly 4ft square (1). OS report that the cross is sited on a natural hillock (2). Tom Clare reports a very large natural mound on the side of a steep valley near Clulow Cross. The mound is almost certainly natural & some nondescript cherts were found (3). Cross seated in square base 1.15m square, 0.25m. Circumference of shaft at base 1.85m, double cordon 1.95m up shaft and a further 0.75m to springing for cross arm. Traces of further cordon below cross arm and decoration between 2 cordons. Height of shaft 2.77m. Situated on hill within remains of wood, surrounded by tumbled stone walling. Immediate area around cross flat and worn by visitors (4). Shown on early C17 map of East Cheshire in PRO (5). Anglo Saxon high cross on mound raised from a spur overlooking Shell Brook valley. Survives as large base and shaft with rems of small wheelhead cross on top. Base is large irregular block of fine gritstone 0.47m high. Shaft and head are cut from a single block of gritstone forming a tapering column to a collar, then squared to the wheel-shaped head. Shaft is 1.95m to collar from base. Collar is a double roll moulding topped by 0.75m squared pillar rising from the four shoulders with roll moulding at the corners (6).
