Monument record 1444 - The Pound - stone structure/animal pen

The Pound. A stone structure made of large compact, squared blocks of local sandstone with small internal compartments. The angular construction of the passage seems to make it difficult for animals to enter. Probably not really a pound (1). In (4), the Pound is described as a small square roadside quarry, later walled or fenced off and used as a pound to herd and keep stray livestock (presumably strayed off the remaining unenclosed land on the Edge). A small builiding is associated with the pound on the 1807 map therefore its use and name possibly date to this period (this is post enclosure of the Edge) (4).
