Summary

Wincle Grange farmhouse is a Grade II* listed building. Wincle was once a grange of Combermere Abbey. A Grange is an area of monastic land that lies outside the Abbey's main land holdings. They were usually farms and were run by the laymen of the monastic order or by hired labour. The lands were held by Combermere until 1537 when it then passed to the Legh family of Ridge, nr Macclesfield. The present building is a farmhouse and may date from the mid 14th century but the oldest visible features are probably late 15th century. The southeast wing was probably originally the great hall. The northwest wing is an 18th century addition with 19th and 20th century repairs. It is sandstone with a stone-slate roof.

Wincle Grange,was a grange of Combermere Abbey. 1 carucate of land granted c.1200 by Earl of Chester to monks of Combermere SW of Nantwich. The lands were held by Combermere until 1537. It passed to Legh family of Ridge, Nr Macclesfield (1)

. Present blg is a farmhouse & may date from mid C14 but oldest visible features prob late C15. NW wing prob C18 alt & repaired C19 & C20. Sandstone with stone-slate roofs. SE wing,prob at 1st great hall. NE side: older wing of 2 storeys & 2 windows, each of 3 trefoil lights. SE end: to lower storey - 4 trefoil lights, to upper storey - 3 square-headed lights. Lower storey - hood moulded with battlement top. Upper storey-alt hood mould with zig-zag carving. SW side: Georgian proptn windows. Int: much altered. SE wing prob contained great hall. Walled-up inglenook on NE wall. Walled up space said to contain a spiral stair. Some stop-chamfered oak beams; a massive Queen-strut truss of oak in attic is alt to take doorway.
