Full Description
<1> Crowe C, 1990, Poynton Ice House (Report). SCH2681.
Building survey undertaken in 1990 of the icehouse associated with Poynton Hall. In 1791 Sir George acquired the collieries at Worth and began commercial exploitation of coal at Poynton and Worth on a large scale. In 1801 Sir George died and the estate passed through his daughter to the Bulkley family, then to the Vernon family of Sudbury Hall, Uttoxeter, through marriage in 1826. The Vernons did not live in the new mansion and it eventually fell into disuse and had disappeared entirely by 1871, when The Towers (CHER 2060/1/1) became the principal seat on the estate.
<2> de Figueiredo P & Treuherz J, 1988, Cheshire Country Houses, p.264 (Book). SCH785.
In 1758 Sir George Warren married a rich heiress, which enabled him to improve his estate, landscape the park & build a new hall to the NW of the original site (RN:2060/1/1). This was an L-shaped house with 2 wings connected by a tall, octagonal staircase tower surmounted by a lantern.
<3> Cheshire County Council, 1992-1995, Cheshire Past, Issue 1, p.24, Cheshire County Council 1991 (Newsletter). SCH870.
