Summary

Grade II listed gatehouse built in the mid/late 17th century. It is brick with ashlar dressings and stone slate roof. There is a stone bearing a coat of arms on one gable. The gatehouse is contemporary with the attached garden wall. It may originally have been a banqueting house.

Full Description

The Gatehouse, Off Church Lane. House, mid/late 17th century. Brick with ashlar dressings and stone slate roof. Entrance front - stone plinth, three bays. A later projecting gabled bay slightly to right of centre, with older stone above bearing coat of arms. To right of this bay is a four-light ashlar ovolo-moulded mullioned and transomed window and ashlar pediment and tympanum. Three-light ashlar mullioned window to first floor. Full architectural description (1). The gatehouse is contemporary with and attached to the garden wall (RN: l332/ 2/2). It is not practical as a gatehouse for the Hall, but may be a garden building, such as a banquetting house beloved by Elizabethan gentry (2).
