Summary

Grade I listed Church of St James and St Paul. It was founded around 1343 or 1370 and is one of the timber-framed churches of Cheshire. It is timber framed with rendered infill and brick with stone plinth and slate roof. There is a 20th century brick extension to the chancel. Marton is mentioned in Domesday, but the church was not built until reign of Edward III, being founded by Sir John de Davenport in the mid 14th Century and in 1370 he gave land to maintain a priest at Marton.

Full Description

Church of St James & St Paul, Off Manchester Rd. 1 of the timber-frame churches of Cheshire. Founded 1343 or 1370. Timber framed with rendered infill & brick with stone plinth & slate roof. C20 brick ext to chancel. W tower with W N & S lean-to porch roofs (as with Essex towers) & spire. Nave with side aisles, all under same roof pitch & chancel. Tower has close studding to walls of porches. Shingled square tower above with C19 wood louvred belfry openings. Shingled broach spire ending in weather vane. Nave & chancel have close studded wall. Int:3 bay nave with aisles. Arcades of octagonal timber piers with moulded capitals & bases supporting chamfered arched braces across nave & to sides forming arcade arches. Cambered ties to nave roof which has King posts. Full arch descp (1) & (2).
