Summary

The site of a chapel built at the Old Hall by Sir Peter Leicester between 1675 and 1678. The design followed or was influenced by that of Brasenose College Chapel in Oxford. Subsidence in April 1927 rendered the chapel unsafe for use and subsequently it was moved to its new location adjacent to Tabley House (see CHER: 1230/2/2).

Chapel built of brick and stone at the ‘Mannour-Hall’ by Sir Peter Leicester in the south east corner of the garden by the pool between 1675 and 1678. The design followed or was influenced by that of Brasenose College Chapel in Oxford. Sixty trees were felled for the construction of the roof and seven or eight more used for the seats. Subsidence in April 1927 rendered the chapel unsafe for use and subsequently it was moved to its new location adjacent to Tabley House, opening in 1927.

‘…In the south-east part of it is a domestic chapel of brick, finished with large bay windows at the sides, a pointed east window, and a bell turret at the west end. The interior is neatly fitted up with oak desks, and precisely resembles a college chapel. Over the door is the date 1675. [It has been considerably altered and improved within the last twenty years, and is now adorned with two or three beautifully painted windows, by the Misses Warren…’
