Full Description
<1> Roberts A F, 1991, A Jawbone from Lindow Moss (Unpublished Report). SCH96.
Animal jawbone found at a peat company's depot at Lindow Moss in August 1991. Recovered from escalator. Examined by Tony Roberts who identified bone as the right mandible of a cow, lacking the sockets of the incisors and the tip of the upright part. Bone is c.315mm long and is strongly curved. Possible traces of burning on the rear edge below the articulation. 5 cheek teeth are present. Wear on teeth suggests an age of 2- 3 years. No signs of butchery. Mandible is small and is likely to be that of Bos Taurus, the domestic cattle. Given the small size and comparison with examples at other sites, mandible is of an early date and perhaps Iron Age.
<2> Stallibrass S, 1993, A Report on an animal bone from Lindow Moss, A Report on an animal bone from Lindow Moss (Unpublished Report). SCH9.
Detailed report by S. Stallibrass confirms Roberts conclusions
