Summary

Grade II listed former farmhouse, now two cottages. Built in the 16th century with mid 19th century alterations. It is timber framed with washed brick infill and a thatched roof. Inside are the remains of a cruck beam. A cruck is a beam used in timber framing. Two curved timbers that are cut from the same tree are used to support a roof from floor to apex.

Full Description

Nos. 13 & 14 Farm Fold Cottages, Altrincham Road, Styal. Formerly farmhouse, now two cottages. C16 with mid C19 alterations. Timber framed with washed brick infill. Thatched roof. Two-bay gable entry cruck-framed house. Three-bay north front. Walls show four tall posts, but other framing lost. Four wooden casements, the upper two in added, timber framed, gabled dormers. East gable shows remains of cruck truss. West gable shows only a pair of crucks. Interior: No.13 shows central full cruck truss with tie beam and collar and wind braced purlins. Probably an inserted floor with chamfered ceiling beams on posts. Full architectural description (1).
