Full Description
Stone head found on a farm at Butley Ash, near Macclesfield. It is probably a medieval corbel. In coarse gritstone, triangular profile, nose not very distinct, but heavy-lidded lentoid eyes. There are no ears or hair shown. The mouth is worn, but a deep slit remains (1). Belongs to a large group of stone heads from Britain which on stylistic grounds are termed 'Celtic', but which show continuity into the Post Medieval period. Exhibited in the 'Lindow Man' Exhibition at The Manchester Museum in 1991 (2).
