Summary

Swanscoe Deer Park was created some time before 1623 and was one of the possessions of the Earls of Derby. During the Civil War it was confiscated and granted to Sir William Brereton of Handforth. Deer Parks were used to house deer, which were an important source of fresh meat. A royal licence was required to create a park and only the very wealthiest could afford to create one. The deer were kept in a fenced and ditched enclosure and could be released to allow hunting. Some parks had a system of ditches and banks known as deer leaps which allowed wild deer (the monarch's property) to enter the park but not escape, so increasing the herd.

Swanscoe Park was one of the possessions of the Earls of Derby, and is mentioned in their records. At the time of the Civil War it was confiscated and was granted to Sir William Brereton of Handforth, in the possession of whose descendants it remained. It is mentioned in the settlement made by his son Sir Thomas Brereton in 1666. From 1623 there is frequent mention in the Macclesfield Registers of Mr Edward Morecroft of Swanscoe Park.

The line of the deer park's pale survives in the line of the road to Swanscoe Park Lane and Kerridge Road. The northern part of the pale survives as an earthwork within the later landscape park. Overally this suggests an oval shaped park, which is consistent with other known seventeenth century deer parks in Cheshire.
