Summary

Grade I listed Old Stable Block at Peover Hall. It is dated 1654 on an inscribed panel to a door lintel. It was built by Ellen Mainwaring as a gift to her son Thomas. It was built of brick wtih stone dressings and a slate roof. The entrance has a moulded stone plinth and stone quoins to corners. Inside there were originally 16 stalls, at the ends of which were an arcade of columns supporting a decorated screen. The form of the internal screen is similar in many of its details to the chapel screen at Cholmondeley of 1655. It is one of the most lavish buildings of this date in cheshire. There is a 20th century addition adjoining to the left and an 18th century coach house to the right. A dovehouse was added within a central bay projecting from the rear of the stables.

Full Description

The Old Stable Block, Peover Hall (formerly listed as 17th century stable block at Peover Hall). Dated 1654 as inscribed panel to door lintel. Brick wtih stone dressings and slate roof. Entrance: moulded stone plinth and stone quoins to corners. A 20th century addition adjoins to the left and the 18th century coach house to the right. 18th century additions to rear. Interior: originally 16 stalls. The terminating posts to the stalls form an elaborate screen. The form of the internal screen is similar in many of its details to the chapel screen at Cholmondeley of 1655. The appliciation of these details to a stable makes this one of the most lavish builings of this date in Cheshire. Full architectural description (1).
