Full Description
The Old Stable Block, Peover Hall (formerly listed as 17th century stable block at Peover Hall). Dated 1654 as inscribed panel to door lintel. Brick wtih stone dressings and slate roof. Entrance: moulded stone plinth and stone quoins to corners. A 20th century addition adjoins to the left and the 18th century coach house to the right. 18th century additions to rear. Interior: originally 16 stalls. The terminating posts to the stalls form an elaborate screen. The form of the internal screen is similar in many of its details to the chapel screen at Cholmondeley of 1655. The appliciation of these details to a stable makes this one of the most lavish builings of this date in Cheshire. Full architectural description (1). A dovehouse was added within a central bay projecting from the rear of the stables (2). Built by Ellen Mainwaring as a gift to her son Thomas (3).
