Full Description
St John's Church, Chelford. A chapel existed at Chelford c.1280, when Robert Worth left the manor of Chelford to St Werburgh's Abbey, on condition that the Abbot provided a chaplain to do divine service. It is probable that a chapel was erected about this time and that services were held regularly. Few records exist relating to the chapel after the Reformation, but services appear to have been held regularly. In 1762 the advowson of the chapel was given to John Parker of Astle Hall. In 1774, the old chapel, which was probably built of timber & plaster, was pulled down as it has become very ruinous and too small. The present church was built and consecrated in 1776 (1).
