Summary

Grade II listed corn barn near Green Farmhouse. It is 17th century with mid 18th century walls and a 20th century roof. It has a large central cart entrance with a wooden lintel and has a timber-framed and brick nogged partition wall inside. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

Full Description

Corn Barn 70m south-east of Green Farmhouse, Peggie's Lane. C17 with mid C18 walls and C20 roof. English garden wall bond purple red brick on rubble sandstone plinth and rubble outshut to rear. Asbestos roof. Large central cart entrance with wooden lintel has lozenge shaped patterns of ventilation to either side. At right end is cart shed with massive wooden lintel over entrance. Interior: Timber-framed and brick nogged partition wall. Roof trusses of a tiebeam and two diagonal struts with simple windbraces to the purlin (1).
