Summary

Grade II listed barn. It was formerly part of Denton Old Hall, Manchester. It was built in the late 15th century and has 18th century brick walls. It was removed and rebuilt in around 1980. It is a brick building on a stone plinth with a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and a central cart entrance and a door under segmental arches with two square pitch holes above. The original timber work can be seen in the south gable.

Full Description

Barn 30m east of Chonar Farmhouse. Formerly part of Denton Old Hall, Manchester, now a barn. Late C15, C18 brick walls but removed and rebuilt c.1980. Brick on stone plinth. Slate roof. Rectangular plan, west face has a central cart entrance and a door under segmental arches and two square pitch holes above. South gable shows original timberwork of cambered tie beam and a central shield. Small panelling above contains quatrefoil pierced wooden panels and a wood mullioned window. Interior: Of four bays. Three roof trusses have heavy moulded cambered tie beams with applied long mouldings to the sides with central blank shields. At the ends the tie beams are arch braced and have two diagonal struts above. Similar mouldings to ceiling beams, which at north end rest on brackets with carved 'lions heads' breathing flames on the spandels. Full architectural description (1).
