Summary

Grade II listed Farmhouse. It has an early 17th century timber framed core encased in an early 19th century brick exterior. The roof is Welsh slate. Inside there are two pairs of full cruck beams from the original house. The house is well documented, with John Barrow recorded as having paid Hearth Tax on one chimney in 1664/6. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting. Crucks are beams used in timber framing. They are two curved timbers that are cut from the same tree are used to support a roof from floor to apex.

Full Description

Farmhouse. Early C17 core encased early C19. Interior timber framed. Exterior brick, Welsh slate roof. Two storeys and three bays. Casement window. Brick end stacks and one on ridge to right of centre. Interior has two pairs of full crucks from oiginal three cell house. Those to left are roughly ogee-shaped with collar and post to support ridge; confused framing within. The other pair are infilled by framing and brickwork and back inserted brick stack. Bressumer of earlier smoke-hood survives. An oak two-light mullioned window has been re-used. Gable ends probably cruck-framed originally. Plan probably baffle-entry originally. House is well documented, with John Barrow recorded as having paid Hearth Tax on one chimney in 1664/6 (1).
