Summary

There are records of a recluse in Macclesfield in 1301 and 1509. An anchorite, Joan Hythe, was walled into the Savage Chapel tower of St. Michael in 1509. Anchorites were religious recluses who lived in isolation for prayer and contemplation. They were often supported by endowments for wealthy benefactors.
