Full Description
The upland pastures of the valley of the Todd Brook retain an unusual pattern of land division. Probably established in 1743, following a grant of land by the Earl of Derby, the open moor was enclosed into fields by dry stone walls. The area of land granted to each farmer was in exact proportion to the size of his holding further down the valley of the Todd Brook, where many of the contemporary farmhouses survive (!). One field retains a stone marker inscribed RAO 1742 (for Richard and Ann Oakes) at SJ 7498 which is listed (2). The same community combined to build Jenkin Chapel during the same period.
