Summary

Traces of a Roman building were recorded at 38 Bridge Street in 1876 when labourers digging the site recorded a number of walls and possible hypocaust pillars across the site. A number of tiles bearing legionary stamps were also recovered.

Full Description

Redevelopment at No 38 Bridge Street (then the premises of Messrs Woods) recorded evidence of large quantities of Roman tile many with legionary stamps and one of the two-line type. Several brick pilae and portions of walls were also noted by the labourers and may indicate a hypocaust. (2)
