Summary

Excavation of a section along the course of Roman road on the south edge of the A50 at Sworton Heath, High Legh prior to the construction of the M56.The road was 63ft wide and made of an 8inch thick layer of sub-angular stones. A large number of tiny pebbles were set in hard brown soil above the stone layer. The stone surface overlies a V-shaped trench cut in the clay subsoil and filled with yellowish brown sandy gravel.

Full Description

Section through North Cheshire Ridge Roman road near Sworton Heath, High Legh, on the line of the M56, on the south edge of the A50. March 1970 - Road was 63ft wide & made of an 8inch thick layer of sub-angular stones. Large number of tiny pebbles in 2ins of hard brown soil above the stone layer. For c.6ft inside both edges of the road the stone surface overlies a V-shaped trench c.30ins deep, cut in the clay subsoil & filled with yellowish brown sandy gravel (1). Road surface had been destroyed but width between the ditches was 18m. There was evidence of a second ditch, outside the first. The soil was waterlogged at this point and it may represent a post-Roman ditch to restore the drainage (4)
