Full Description
Gawsworth New Hall. Country House, 1707-1712 with later additions and alterations. Red Flemish bond brick with stone slate roof. E-shaped plan. Full architectural description (1). By the end of the 17th century, the Old Hall was considered to be in disrepair and in c.1700 the west wing was demolished. This left a house that was too small for Lord Mohun, who came into the property in 1701. In 1707 he began the construction of the New Hall, but it was abandoned after his death in a duel with the Duke of Hamilton in 1712 in which both men were killed (2).
