Summary

There is a Grade II* listed Roman Sarcophagus in the garden at Withington Hall. It was brougt from Italy in the 19th century. It is made of marble and is in the form of a bowl with straight sides and rounded ends. The cover is missing. It dates to the 3rd century and has a central panel showing the three graces in high relief. On either end are figures of husband and wife, each with a smaller figure at their feet. The faces of these four figures are only blocked in.

Full Description

Roman Sarcophagus in Garden at Withington Hall. Early 3rd century. Marble. Bowl with straight sides and rounded ends, missing cover. Front: central panel showing three graces in high relief. Figures of husband and wife in high relief to either end, each with a smaller figure at their feet. The faces of these four figures are only blocked in. Vertical fluting with cable to either end. Flutings extend half-way round each end, after which the outine of arabesque patterns has been roughly blocked in. Rear is plain. Full description (1). Brought from Italy in C19 (2).
