Summary

Grade II* listed Peover Hall which is dated 1585 on the datestone with additions and alterations made in the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. It was originally built for Sir Randle Mainwaring and was intended to be the first phase of a much bigger house but was never completed. The building has an Elizabethan brick block linked to the later Georgian block. The Georgian extension was demolished during restoration in the 1960's. Inside are a variety of panellings brought from other houses.

Full Description

Peover Hall, Peover Hall Park. Dated 1585 on datestone with additions & alterations c.1653-6, c.1763, c.1944 & 1966. Blt for Sir Randle Mainwaring. Intended to be 1st phase in blg of a much larger E or H-shaped house on which work was begun c.1585 & halted c.1590, & never continued to the original plan. Brick with stone dressings & stone slate roof. The blg consists of an Elizbthn block & a link wing of C16 & a main block which is Georgian. Interior: Cross passage with wall panelling with frieze above showing deer in grove of fruit- bearing trees. Kitchen has open timber ceiling of heavy beams. Hall panelling brought from Horsley, nr Chester, this C. Morning room has panelling from Otley Park, Salop & Ellesmere, Salop, this C .1st floor - Oak room has moulded truss of c.1585 with panelling of c.1650 & contemporary fireplace with Ionic pilasters. Long gallery-floor was lowered c.1764 when the bolection moulded panelling was installed with a plaster frieze above.
