Full Description
The Market Hall. Situated in front of the church on what is now a triangular island of ground (1). The Black Prince erected a permanent market hall on the recommendation of his stewards c.1358. This was the former Foxtwist Hall (RN: 1430) which was dismantled by the Black Prince as a punishment to Robert de Foxtwist for his misdemenors on the prince's estates. It was re-erected in the Market Place at a cost of 71 pounds (2). A map of 1803 shows the hall with its four shops beneath it, and the market square surrounded by stalls (3). The hall was dismantled in 1826 when the market place was cleared (1).
