Full Description
Neolithic perforated stone axe. Said to have been found in the clay pit adjacent to Miss Beswick's house, ie that belonging to the Bexton Brick Works about 70 years ago (ie c.1884). Lily Chitty identified it as a type which originated in the western Pennines. Prof. Shotton of Birmingham carried out a petrological examination & identified it as 'a fine sandstone of greywacke type, probably from somewhere in Wales, where it is a widespread type of rock.' (1). Axe was in Knutsford Public Library in 1964 (2).
