Full Description
Evidence of wall foundations of a probable Roman date were uncovered during the construction of the war memorial in St Werburgh Street in 1921 (2). An east-west aligned wall approximately 1.2m thick with ashlar facing and cobble foundations was recovered at a depth of 1.8m. A second wall built on flag foundations on the bedrock was recorded on a similar alignment 1.5m to the south. To the west of the walls several large building stones – probably collapsed wall material – were also recovered including part of a cornice (1)
